Speaking is the basic and easiest means of communicating and we are commanded by our Master to only say the best words, words that are true, words that do not hurt others feelings, words that are according to the level of understanding of the listeners etc. To choose the best words we must think before speaking and that will also help in not having to regret later on after saying something that was not intended. This will also help keep our record with the record writing angels in a better shape, ALLAH says: "Not a word does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it).'' (50:18)
Islam has given us a complete guideline for the entire life, and by pondering on these commands and instructions we can easily realize that if these are followed in a society, then many of the social problems will not remain. The time and energies spent in useless talk could be utilized in some constructive efforts towards the improvement in general.
We have been instructed by the Prophet (pbuh) that, "From the excellence of a man's islam is to leave that which does not concern him." [Tirmidhi]
Abû Hurayrah relates that ALLAH's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in ALLAH and the Last Day should speak a good word or remain silent." [ Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim ]
So silence is better than a bad, false, hurtful and useless word.
